Premiering this week: Luba, Simply Luba

I’ve seen the Luba Goy one woman show before and it is hilarious. Luba wasn’t on stage, she was showing off art in her house and holding court during a delightful interview on the Danforth. Nonetheless, any occasion with Luba is a one woman show. Her true life stories are funny and fascinating and you can hear them now from the lady herself in Luba, Simply Luba. The stage show previews tonight at the Berkeley Street Theatre and is scheduled through May 26. There are still tickets left, but it is a small theatre so act now.
Goy was already prepping this work when I spoke with her last spring while conducting interviews for Air Farce: 40 Years of Flying by the Seat of Our Pants. At that point she was thinking of calling the show After Farce, but since she is still Farce-ing (the troupe will be back on CBC next New Year’s Eve), that title didn’t work.
Written by Diane Flacks with help from Luba (of course) and director Andrey Tarasiuk, the show promises to follow Goy’s adventures from the Ukraine to Rideau Hall, with stops at Stratford and, of course, her nearly 40-year flight with the Royal Canadian Air Farce. Goy has won 15 ACTRA Awards and is one of the first Canadians inducted into the International Humour Hall of Fame.
I’m dying to hear if she tells the parakeet story; it is a killer. There will be the Donald Duck voice, guaranteed. Ukrainian will also be spoken. That would be Luba, Simply Luba.
