Sound of Music drowns out Wonderful Life

Late in posting this on a Saturday night, but if you live on the West coast, NBC is rerunning The Sound of Music Live. They`re even bumping their annual airing of It`s a Wonderful Life to make room for the production. (The Frank Capra classic has now been rescheduled for next Saturday, Dec. 20).

Now, although I saw it as a child, I’m not a great fan of the original 1965 Sound of Music. Around `the second hour I start rooting for the Nazis. Clearly, however, a lot of viewers are much fonder of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical. It drew 21.3 million U.S. viewers according to Nielsen’s Live+3 ratings results.
That was more than enough for NBC to declare its plan to make mounting and airing a live TV musical an annual holiday event. A second title is expected to be announced early in the new year, perhaps at NBC`s TCA press day in January.
