At least this judge won’t be accused of sleeping with any of the Idol boy toys.
Fox announced late Wednesday that Ellen DeGeneres will be the fourth judge this season on American Idol.
“DeGeneres will join the judges’ panel after the auditions,” the release states, “which will feature appearances by guest judges Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain.”
The Emmy-winning comedienne was quoted saying she was thrilled to be the new judge on TV’s No. 1 series, which returns for a ninth season on January. ”I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote.” DeGeneres will keep her day job as host of a popular syndicated talk show, which is entering its seventh season. She announced the deal at Wednesday’s Ellen DeGeneres Show taping, which airs today (Thursday). Fox has her locked up for five years.
Abdul failed to come to an agreement with Fox after her contract ran out earlier this year. Fox officials told critics at press tour in August they offered Abdul a raise. Their patience with the renewal seemed to run out after Abdul started twittering that she was ditching the songfest.
The deal is a win win for Fox. They get a fresh, famous face for their showcase hit, which needs a jolt after trending down the past two seasons. They lose a headline machine in Abdul but one who tested the theory that there is no such thing as bad publicity.
