Some U.S. cable shows still take a little longer to get to Canada. Take Rizzoli & Isles, which premieres Tuesday Jan. 3 at 10 p.m. on Showcase. The police series stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander and premiered in 2010 on TNT, where it was an instant hit. A third season has already been ordered.
I’ve got a story about how this series is one of at least a dozen currently on TV inspired by a published work. Rizzoli & Isles is based on The Apprentice by bestselling author Tess Gerritsen. Dexter, True Blood, Bones, Game of Thrones and Murdoch Mysteries are all book based, as is the upcoming NBC drama The Firm. Jump to the rest of that story, also in Sunday’s Toronto Star, here.
The above video was shot on the very welcoming set of Rizzoli & Isles late last July at the start of the summer TCA press tour. The series shoots on Stage Four of the Paramount lot in Hollywood. Those goofballs at the start of the video are fellow critics and TV columnists Neal Justin, Roger Catlin, Bill Harris and Brad Oswald. If any of them were really on Rizzoli & Isles I’d watch every week.
Harmon was loose as a goose on the set and reveals what cartoon character a co-star says she most resembles. It is not one I would have come up with, although after a glimpse of her manic energy on the set, I think I get it.
