It used to be that a Sunday night Emmy Awards broadcast would easily top the weekly ratings in the US and Canada. Numeris’ most recent Live+7 Totals, however, show that, for the week of Sept. 13-19, CTV’s simulcast of the Emmys drew 1,249,000, landing in third spot for the week. Both the CTV Evening News weeknight average and the Tuesday night episode of America’s Got Talent on Citytv topped the Emmys for the week among English viewers in Canada.

In the US, the Emmy Awards have slipped even further, proportionally. CBS’s broadcast was watched by 7.4 million viewers, higher than the year before — although that was likely boosted by a LA Chargers-Dallas Cowboys football overrun on CBS.

Among English Canada viewers, here’s how the top ten shows fared the second week of September in average minute audience (adults 2+ as measured by Numeris):

  1. CTV Evening News (CTV) MTWTF 1,358,000
  2. America’s Got Talent (Citytv) Tues 1,293,000
  3. The Emmy Awards (CTV) Sun 1,249,000
  4. America’s Got Talent (Citytv) Wed 1,209,000
  5. CTV Evening News Weekend (CTV) Sat 1,053,000
  6. CTV National News (CTV) MTWTFSS 980,000
  7. NFL Late Game (CTV) Sun 937,000
  8. Masterchef (CTV) Wed 930,000
  9. Big Brother (Global) Wed 902,000
  10. Big Brother (Global) Fri 885,000

Just missing the cut was the week’s third episode of Big Brother, drawing 858,000 and 11th spot on Global. Two episodes of the new series Fantasy Island came in at No. 12 (807,000 on Tuesday) and No. 15 (drawing 767,000 on Sunday).

Seven days worth of Toronto Blue Jays baseball added up to an average audience of 798,000 viewers and a 13th place finish for Sportsnet National. The NFL’s Early 1 p.m. ET game on Sunday the 19th drew 707,000 on CTV, finishing 20th for the week.

CBC was back in the win column with the 15th season premiere of Murdoch Mysteries. It finished in 16th place that Monday night with 743,000 Live+7 viewers.

Global has high hopes for Family Law, the Vancouver-based legal series starring Jewel Staite (listen to her now at brioux.tv: the podcast). The network, which canceled their original drama Private Eyes last spring, has already ordered a second season of Family Law. It premiered to Thursdays ago to 652,000 Total viewers for a 24th place finish.

In other new shows news, Hell’s Kitchen: Young Guns drew 720,000 in simulcast on Monday at 9 p.m. on Citytv for 17th overall, besting its 8 p.m. episode score of 624,000 (26th place).

Not charting in the English Canadian Top 30 that week: the debut episodes of new CBC shows Strays, Race Against the Tide and Moonshine.

Next week: Fewer than usual, but some new fall imports hit Canadian schedules as the 2021-2022 broadcast season officially begins.
