What is your all-time favourite TV theme song? Did you have a TV show you never missed when you were a child?

These questions were put to the stars of Burden of Truth, the Winnipeg-based legal drama just moving in to a third season Wednesday nights on CBC. I had the good fortune to be on location with the series last fall as the cast and crew assembled on a university campus. (More on that in the next post.) I caught up with Peter Mooney and Kristin Kreuk again about a month later in Toronto at CBC’s winter media launch and posed the two TV questions.

Best idea for a kids show ever

Mooney’s theme song and kid show answer, as you’ll see in the video at the top of this post, is a beaut. He grew up in Winnipeg and was a fan of the Canadian/American animated series Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. Based on a comic book and set in the future, the series was about the adventures of a team of ecological freedom fighters known as the Mechanics. The main dude, Jack Tenrec, has a passion for restoring vintage cars and patrols around in a pre-fin, late ’40s era Caddy. His kick-ass babe companion is named Hannah Dundee. His trusty pet Allosaurus, Hermes, is part of his posse. With Nelvanna as one of the producers, the series ran for one season in 1993-94 on CBS Kids.

As one YouTube commentator put it, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs is “strangely boss.”

And, yes, it has a cool if lyric-less theme. Why it hasn’t been turned into a big budget, live-action feature yet I’ll never know. See why Mooney was such a fan here.

Burden of Truth returns for a third season Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBC.
