No joke: Oscar ratings way, way down

UPDATE: Don’t have a bird, man. Oscar ratings plummeted across the U.S. The nearly four-hour statue-fest sank 12% nation-wide in overnights compared to last year. In Buffalo, N.Y., according to my colleague Alan Pergament, ratings were down a whopping 25%. More viewers watched last week’s equally long Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary special in Buffalo than… Read on

Dangling divas helps Grammy hook City viewers

City drew 2,639,000 overnight, estimated viewers Sunday with the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. That’s a record for them (over last year’s Grammy tally) and a lot more than they’ve been getting on a Sunday night with Hometown Hockey. The Canadian broadcaster announced Monday it has locked rights to the industry music fest for another two… Read on

Super Bowl overnights indicate most-watched ever

UPDATE: Preliminary overnight rating reports show Sunday’s Super Bowl XLIX will be the most-watched TV show in U.S. and Canadian history. Marc Berman over at TV Media Insights reports it scored an overnight record 49.7 rating/72 share in households. No surprise, really, given the tight, back-and-forth score and dramatic ending. Holy Schitt! Schitt’s Creek debuts to 1.4M

PASADENA, Calif.–The preliminary overnight numbers are in, and the new Eugene Levy/Catherine O’Hara comedy Schitt’s Creek opened strong, premiering to 1,359,000 estimated viewers. More encouraging for CBC, a second episode at 9:30 drew 1,366,000. Even Guy Caballero would be impressed. That was opposite some stiff import competition in Canada Tuesday night: Global led the 9 p.m. hour… Read on

The numbers below are overnight estimates for the week of November 3 to 9, adults 2+. MONDAY Gotham remains bat-strong drawing 1,690,000 in the overnights. I’m guessing the next two were repeats on CTV: Law… Read on

The week in Canada: Oct. 27 – Nov. 2

The World Series, municipal elections, Wallendas walking across Chicago skyscrapers (above)–it’s not just The Walking Dead rocking broadcast schedules these days. In the States, shows are finally getting canceled, with three comedies (Bad Judge, A to Z and Manhattan Love Story) and one reality show (Utopia) getting axed. Here’s a look at the overnight estimates for… Read on

The week in Canada: Oct. 20 – 26

A busy week has pushed this ratings report way back. Still, hands up who wants numbers? Worth a look as the season marches well into its second month, MONDAY Gotham remains a consistent winner Monday nights on CTV drawing 1,691,000 overnight viewers. Forever followed with 1,281,000 and Castle remained huge at 10 drawing 1,987,000. Global… Read on

The week in Canada: Oct. 13 – 19

Some early successes in the Canadian prime time ratings race may have to be tempered with U.S. results. Fox seems to be in free fall, with only Gotham on steady ground. Don’t count on a full season of Gracepoint, for example, no matter how well it does on Global. The impact of Rogers’ NHL deal… Read on
