This week, CHML’s Scott Thompson gets me yakking about the 50th anniversary of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer (airing Dec. 20 on YTV and Dec. 22 on CBC). I go into detail on stories I’ve posted recently about Toronto radio and TV legend Paul Soles,who voiced Hermey the Elf. Also mentioned are other Toronto-based voice artists who helped bring that special to life.
We also talk about A Charlie Brown Christmas, which first aired in December of 1965, one year after Rudolph. Scott wants to know why the voice of Charlie Brown and the other characters changes from year to year. Scott seems to think it would be cool if Chuck sounded like a dude in his 50s by now.
Scott also asks about the TV coverage of of the funeral of Montreal Canadiens hockey legend Jean Beliveau. I remember my dad pointing out. over all those Saturday nights spent watching Hockey Night in Canada in the ’60s, how Beliveau always skated with his head up. Even a Leafs fan like my dad was a great admirer of Beliveau. The great dignity of the man seemed to me to be reflected in the coverage of his funeral, and gave Canadians everywhere a chance to hold all our heads high.
