Last Sunday’s three-and-a-half hour coverage of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s resounding Liberal Party leadership win was also a victory for the CBC. The late afternoon broadcast drew close to a million overnight, estimated viewers combined on CBC and CBC News Network.
The overnight totals break down this way: CBC News Network 549,000; CBC Total 437,000.
If the CBC main network total doesn’t sound like much, keep in mind that the public broadcaster’s next highest draw that Sunday night was The Great British Bake Off at 284,000 viewers.
The rival private networks led with American imports later that same evening, including Tracker (772,000) and new pickup Suite LA (178,000), both CTV simulcasts, and Watson (435,000) and The Equalizer (377,000) in overnights on Global.
CBC has been getting a boost for weeks with coverage of the escalating free trade tariff talk wafting up from south of the border. On Tuesday, March 4, on the president’s address to congress, the CBC News Special was the most-watched primetime program in Canada according to Numeris and Adobe Analytics. It drew a combined average minute audience of 848,000 on CBC and CBC News Network.
This made it the most-watched day on CBC News Network since the Coronation of King Charles III in May of 2023.
