CTV’s three hour and forty-eight minute simulcast of Sunday’s 97th Annual Oscar Awards was watched by an overnight, estimated audience in Canada of 3,236,000 viewers.

That’s down from 3.5 million in 2024.

While the year before featured a contest between big box office draws such as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” I’ve already forgotten the names of the recent crop of Best Picture contenders.

CTV’s 20 minute etalk: After the Oscars had an overnight estimate of 658,000 viewers.

In the US, the Oscars drew 18.07 million viewers on ABC and streaming partner Hulu, down seven per cent from the year before. That 2024 audience was calculated at 19.5 million. Sunday’s decline came after three straight years of Oscar audience growth. The Awards ceremony bottomed out, due to COVID, in April of 2021 when the pandemic forced a scaled back ceremony held at Los Angeles’ Union Station. That broadcast fetched just 10.4 million viewers.

ABC, the long time home of the Oscars, may be on the outs after its current contract expires in 2028. Since Netflix makes some of the movies that are in contention each year now, don’t be surprised if the awards show eventually migrates to the streaming service.
