Win or lose on the field, the Toronto Blue Jays remain the only game in town in terms of live broadcast and specialty viewership across Canada.
With numbers for Friday night’s Fifth Game of the series in Seatle still to come in, here is how the first four nights rated (all data measured in average minute audience):
Sunday, October 12: While they got beat up at home in Toronto for the series opener, the Jays pulled a mighty 3,321,000 in overnight estimates on Sportsnet National, a robust 1,159,000 of those viewers in the coveted 18-49-year-old demo. Sportsnet’s pre-game show drew 1,420,000. Nothing else came close. Sunday night’s primetime NFL game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Green Bay Packers tackled 463,000 on TSN and a further 319,000 on CTV. CBC’s Great Canadian Baking Show rose to 212,000 at 350 degrees.
Monday, October 13: Sunday’s disappointing loss dented the Monday total with 2,934,000 staying on the bandwagon at Sportsnet National. New season premieres on the broadcast networks opened low but Live+7 and other PVR and digital numbers will boost these totals: FBI tracked down 495,000 on Global. That is also where the new comedy import DMV saw 353,000 line up. A two-hour The Voice sang to 464,000 on CTV. Top show on CBC was not Coronation Street for once but the return of old favourite Murdoch Mysteries with 353,000 viewers.
Wednesday, October 15: Nothing like a road win to boost TV ratings. Jays in Seattle for the first of three drew 3,126,000. Global’s 90 minute Survivor marooned 590,000.
Thursday, October 16: a second, resounding road win, featuring fired up pitcher “mad” Max Sherzer, drove in 3,345,000 viewers in overnight estimates for Sportsnet National’s Game Four coverage. The pre-game show was caught by 1,032,000 viewrers in a strong month for Sportsnet. Some season premieres of imported hours kept the lights on in broadcast with Global dialing up 635,000 for 9-1-1, 510,000 for Matlock and 526,000 for Elspeth. An exciting Thursday Night Football game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pittsburgh Steelers tackled 412,000 on TSN.
