TSN has millions of reasons to cheer on Canada in Sunday’s World Cup match against South Africa.
In their Group round games, Canada has been pulling on average around four million viewers. That electric victory over Qatar a week ago Thursday at BC Place in Vancouver drew an average minute audience of 5.2 million viewers, standing as the most-watched World Cup match ever in Canada.
The Canadian Men’s team’s opening game resulting in a 1-1 draw pulled 3.2 million viewers. A subsequent game against Switzerland ending in 2-1 loss attracted an average minute audience of 4.1 million on TSN, RDS, CTV, Noovo, and Crave, Based on Numeris data, Bell Media says that was an increase of 147 per cent compared to Canada’s third match at the 2022 tournament.
It helps, of course, that Canada’s games up until Sunday have all been played in Canada, and that the team has been competitive with one win, one tie and one loss so far.
TSN and the other Bell World Cup platforms also averaged over a million viewers in non-Canada matches throughout the Group stage.
Writing about the games this World Cup for The Toronto Star has been John Doyle, who retired at TV columnist at The Globe and Mail in 2022. Starting Monday, you can hear John on this, the fourth World Cup he has covered, as my guest on the next episode of brioux.tv: the podcast.
