I know, I know… you can’t tell a book by its cover and you can’t judge a series on a short promo clip. But you CAN tell whether a bowl of soup is any good after one spoonful — and I daresay “Running Wild” ain’t to my liking. The over-the-top slam bang writing hearkens back to the comedy first perfected by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry on “Get Smart” in the mid-sixties. However, that show worked because you never felt Maxwell Smart was trying to be funny. He played everything dead straight. And it was that much funnier because the supporting characters (Agent 99 and Chief) weren’t set up to be equally idiotic. They provided some normality (and a good balance) to Maxwell’s skewed way of fumbling through each and every situation. Judging by the short clip of “Running Wild”, the goal of the writers seems to be to arm each character with rapid fire jokes and silly physicality. If the viewer doesn’t find the first joke funny, then how ’bout this one? Or this? Or this? I felt drained after watching just the clip. I suspect I’d be pulling my hair out if I had to sit through a half hour of this drivel.
…Of course I meant to say that Maxwell Smart was NOT trying to be funny. Hmm. Missed that in the preview before posting.
Missed it by THAT much.
