Sunday marks the culmination of the annual salute to TV and film now known as the Canadian Screen Awards, or, as I like to call them, “The Needies.”
Not attending the gala Sunday evening in Toronto is Matt Craven, one of many talented Canadian-born actors working in the United States. Craven is among the stars of Resurrection, an interesting new drama premiering Sunday night on ABC and City.
Resurrection, which also stars Omar Epps, Kurtwood Smith and Francis Fisher, is about this town in America where people who have been dead for many years, in some instances decades, suddenly start to return to their families and loved ones. Craven plays the town sheriff who is shocked to suddenly see the little nephew he lost 32 years earlier.
Some in the Canadian TV and film industry seem to resent ex-patriots who leave Canada to act, write or produce in other countries but I’ve never understood this. We don’t get worked up when talented Canadians play for the Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres or L.A. Kings.
I spoke with Craven in January at the ABC evening event during the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour in Pasadena, Calf. The Port Colborne native grew up in the Niagara region and just works and works and works–he has 78 credits on IMDb!
The 57-year-old just has one of those familiar faces–you think maybe you went to school with him, or he coached your son’s soccer team. No, you’ve just seen him all your life in films (dating all the way back to Meatballs) or TV.
