PASADENA, Calif.–Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I took Oxygen up on their challenge to ditch my lap top for a canvas and some spray cans. The NBC-Universal-owned U.S. cable channel turned the terrace at the Langham hotel into an art studio Thursday. Tarps were spead across the floor and several easels were set up. Oxygen has this show Street Art Throwdown and they hosted a “Make your own Throwie” activation centre. Five contestants on the series, all budding Banksys, were there to guide reporters.
My idea was to take my logo pic and try to render it as a caricature in spray paint. The very colourful Vanessa “Agana” Espinoza was my guide and set up the spray cans. Check her out among other women “beautifying the streets” here.
I used to draw quite a bit but am rusty as hell and have never tried spray art. Getting those thin lines will take more than 30 minutes of practice but I managed a half-assed head shot.
Bottom line, a little Oxygen and paint never hurt anybody. Thanks for an arty afternoon in the sun.
