Every year, there’s one award show that cuts through all the usual boring back-slapping and industry naval-gazing and actually provides viewers with real laughs and entertainment. This weekend, it’s back.
No, not The Oscars, please–we’re talking the 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards
Sure, it’s got the most awkward title but the Spirit Awards always has the coolest hosts. This year it is Kate “reason to watch SNL”McKinnon and Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) who will, as the release says, “guide viewers through an inevitably irreverent ceremony.”
Catch it live in Canada on Hollywood Suite (still crazy cheap at $6 a month!) and in the U.S. on IFC beginning at 5 p.m. ET, 2 p.m. PT. They’ll both also repeat it all night.
McKinnon, as you can see in the above clip, already has her cheeky game face on.

Among the scheduled presenters are Jason Bateman, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Chelsea Handler, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Keaton, Aaron Paul, Freida Pinto and JK Simmons. They’ll probably do stuff you won’t see or hear at the Oscars, too, and, yes, there is an open bar.
Up for awards this year are blah blah blah blah blah blah and blah. Like the U.S. presidential election primaries, it just doesn’t matter.
The whole thing takes place in a giant tent set up on the beach in Santa Monica. I mean, how cool is that. Watch and save yourself four hours you’ll never get back by turning the Oscars off right after Rock’s monologue. You’re welcome.
