Do not adjust your set! CBC’s annual Air Farce New Year’s Eve special premieres Friday night at 8 p.m., 24 hours earlier than normal. Why? New Year’s Eve falls on a Saturday this year, and nothing bumps Hockey Night in Canada, not even now that it is really a Rogers/Sportsnet production.
The cast has expanded to seven this year with the return of Jessica Holmes, back after a six year hiatus. Don Ferguson, Luba Goy, Craig Lauzon, Darryl Hinds, Aisha Alfa and Emma Hunter round out the cast. For the first time ever, Air Farce has more women than men in the troupe. Founding member Ferguson calls it the best cast ever. Read more in this feature I wrote this week for The Canadian Press.
I was at first of two nights of Farce tapings earlier this month and found it one of their funniest shows in years. A great addition is all the Farce Films, the out-of-studio video segments. Watch above as Alfa and Lauzon goof on Rihanna and Justin Trudeau, with a little help from Holmes as so-so singer Sophie Trudeau.
Among the guests tonight are soon-to-retire CBC News anchor Peter Mansbridge, who helps Don Ferguson goof on the year’s news headlines. Ron MacLean, Yannick Bisson (Murdoch Mysteries), soccer superstar Christine Sinclair, party leaders Tom Mulcair and Elizabeth May, and MPs Tony Clement and David Christopherson are also in on the act.
If you miss Friday’s airing, the special will be re-broadcast in Quebec and Ontario Saturday night after the hockey game (around 10 p.m.) as well as on Sunday night at 7 p.m. May the Farce be with you!
