Originally, I was not going to attend the winter 2024 Television Critics Association press tour. Then AppleTV turned me around.
To be specific, Allie Page and her promotional team at AppleTV+ Canada. They and their US-based colleages have mounted a very impressive lineup of talent to kick off Day One of this press tour, which runs until Feb. 15 at the Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, Calif.
Apple has quietly become the big subscription-based streaming service that stands alone in curating exclusive original content. In four short, mainly COVID challenged years, they’ve built a library of his such as The Morning Show, Shrinking, slow Horses and Ted Lasso. You don’t find endless libraries of legacy broadcast shows such as Friends or The Office on Apple, and while they have their fans for sure, a lack of inventory clutter makes the gems stand out.
Their nine press conferences today feature new and returning gems showcasing big name stars such as Maya Rudolph, Ktisten Wiig, Laura Dern, Carol Burnett, Michael Douglas, Eugene Levy, Tobias Menzies and many others. The variety of the offer is pretty impressive as well, with comedies such as Wiig’s Palm Royal and Rudolph’s returning Loot in contrast to the suspensful space epic Constellation and the history-based period dramas Manhunt and Franklin.
There’s also a cool sports doc, The Dynasty: New England Patriots, for fans of the NFL team many of us love to hate.
Check out the sizzle reel above for a test of AppleTV+ in the coming days, weeks and months.
