Overnight estimates for Saturday night’s nearly three hour live broadcast of The Tragically Hip’s end-of-tour performance in Kingston puts the average minute audience at 4,039,000.
That’s an impressive number for a Saturday night in summer and should easily stand as the most-watched show of the week in Canada, outperforming CBC’s Olympic Games coverage. The Olympic prime time lead-in Saturday night, for example, pulled an overnight, estimated 1,658,000 viewers. CBC’s coverage of the opening ceremonies of the Rio Summer Olympic Games topped the list of top-rated programs in English Canada the week of Aug. 1 – 7 with 2,402,000 total 2+ viewers.
In addition, a CBC release stated the concert special was also streamed 900,000 times around the world.
Live+7 final numbers will show even more viewers PVR’d the special and watched it later. CBC also broadcast the concert on CBC Radio One, SiriusXM and across other platforms.
