Slow news day, huh?
Before everyone stops caring (too late, probably), here’s how the Royal Wedding coverage played out numbers-wise Friday across Canada. The comparisons are a bit apples and orange-y, with different start and finish times, but, bottom line, a lot of us got up early and watched. Here’s roughly how things shook out:
CTV, between 6 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. (the actual wedding ceremony), drew 1,534,000 overnight, estimated viewers. From 7:15 to 8:30, immediately following the wedding and leading up to the balcony kiss(es), the audience rose to over 1.7 million.
CBC was on the air at 2 a.m. but from 5 a.m. to 10 they averaged an overnight, estimated 1,032,000 viewers.
Global averaged 370,000 viewers over a 6 hour period from 4 a.m. to 10.
CBC New Network averaged 401,000 viewers from 5 a.m. to 10, with CNN drawing 204,000 from 4 to 10. CTV News Channel managed a high of 130,000 from 7:15 a.m. to 8:30.
The fledgling Sun News Network found 15,000 viewers from 6 a.m. to 8 and 13,000 from 8 a.m. to 11.
A small number of Canadians watched Royal coverage on U.S. network affiliate morning show broadcasts. In Toronto, for example, CBS affiliate WGRZ drew 22,000 to its Today Show coverage of the Royal Wedding Friday at 7 a.m.

Time for an upgrade?
I really enjoyed flipping OTA between Sun and CBC/CTV and seeing the HD-less widescreen presentation difference of the exact same wedding video footage. SunTV unfortunately are using too much of a doubled scroll bar.
Same went for Monday night’s election speeches.
