Always alert John Doyle at The Globe & Mail had this story way back last August at the most recent TCA press tour: unknown Canuck creates one of this season’s most promising U.S. dramas. A Canadian feel good story like this is worth repeating, however, so I put my spin on it for The Canadian Press this week:
A Toronto lad, Phillip Iscove, came up with the idea behind this fall’s first breakout hit, Sleepy Hollow. The series, starring Tim Mison as Washington Irving’s Revolutionary War soldier Icabod Crane thrust into the 21st century, airs Monday nights on Fox and Global.
Iscove used to work at a downtown Toronto video store while a Film student at Ryerson University. Later he got a job in the trenches at a Hollywood talent agency. He got to see first hand what ideas score with networks and studios and which ones flop. When the time came, he was able to craft his story pitch accordingly. Showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Fringe) git it instantly.
Iscove speaks highly of the Ryerson Film program. “It gave me the tools to understand how to write in film and how to sort of understand the connection between words and image. It was really helpful.”
