CBC’s much ballyhooed reboot of Street Legal opened Monday to 376,000 overnight, estimated viewers.

The Toronto-lensed legal drama brought Cynthia Dale (above) back as saucy solicitor Olivia Novak after a 25 year absence. The series shed a half million overnight viewers from its strong lead-in, the season finale of Murdoch Mysteries (867,000 in overnights; will vault over a million once Live+7 data is compiled and released in another week).

It’s also down about the same half mil in the timeslot from Coroner, CBC’s robust fall entry. That rookie drama concluded for the season last week and nearly matched Murdoch with a plus-million totals result in the most recent Numeris English Canada Top-30 tally.

Opposite Street Legal Monday at 9 were the usual imported suspects: Magnum, P.I. on CTV (881,000 overnight viewers), The Voice on CTV Two (averaging 560,000 over its two hour slot), The Bachelor on Citytv (548,000 in its 8-10 pm time period) and a rerun of Bull on Global (405,000).

Street Legal‘s second episode, “Moving Day,” airs behind a rerun of Murdoch next Monday night at 9 p.m. on CBC and streams on CBC GEM.

  1. Ouch. And that was with a strong lead-in and relatively weak competition that evening.

With its lead-in having reruns, and 9-1-1 coming back soon, that can’t be too good for CBC’s supposed breadwinner.
