Way back in the days when I worked at TV Guide Canada, a gentleman named Harry Purvis was our semi-resident movie buff. Harry the Hat, as he was known in his native Hamilton, Ont., had a photographic memory when it came to movie dialogue and acting credits dating back to when he was a lad watching movies for a quarter or less in the 1930s. His legend grew when some of us found out he also contributed very funny “flicker snickers” to Mad Magazine.

Here is one of Harry’s collections of lines from classic — and not so classic — horror films. Name the actor who said it and the movie. (Answers below).

  1. “That, madam, was not done by your average rodent.” (1983)
  2. “I shot one! And it had great blood! And I think they’re on their way up here!” (1983)
  3. “Interesting, isn’t it? One of my pupils is about to dip a body into a vat of wax.” (1953)
  4. “I tear torture out of myself by torturing you!” (1935)
  5. “Better be nice to me Ted. I become a full-fledged priestess tonight.” (1957)
  6. “Better turn around. This mightn’t be pleasant.” (1940)
  7. “If it hadn’t been stopped, this blob might have consumed America, perhaps the entire planet.” (1972)
  8. “The fingerprints are luminous.” (1955)
  9. “According to the newspapers, the gorilla gives his victims only 24 hours notice.” (1939
  10. Whoever did it ought to be caged and fed raw meat.” (1981)
  11. “I just wish all those people hadn’t died here.” (1979)
  12. “I opened my eyes, and a long, claw-like hand came out of the wall!” (1939)
  13. “You think I’m mad. Perhaps I am.” (1935)
