Have you heard? The Listener is kaput at CTV

Another slow summer week in Canada, ratings-wise. Here’s a quick look at Aug. 4-10 according to overnight estimates:

MONDAY

The big news this week was that CTV has announced it is shutting down The Listener after five seasons and 65 episodes. The show they couldn’t kill with a stick is finally getting whacked but there seems to be plenty of evidence that it could have listened for another year or two. Monday it drew 1,153,000 in the overnights, ranking it as the third most-watched show on the night behind only its lead-in, Masterchef (2,072,000) and Global’s Under the Dome (1,478,000). That will probably swell up near 1.4 million once the Live+7 totals are factored with a half million of those viewers in the demo.It will finish its run next Monday a Top-10 show in Canada for the summer months.

Here’s what it beat Monday: Hotel Hell on Global (1,099,000), Mistresses on CTV (693,000), a fairly robust repeat of Murdoch Mysteries on CBC (502,000) and a whole lot of nothing.

TUESDAY

Did you know they are still playing soccer games on CBC? The FIFA Under-20 Women’s game between Canada and Ghana drew 355,000. That got swamped by CTV’s Amazing Race Canada (1,967,000) and Person of Interest (783,000), Global’s NCIS and NCIS:LA (1,108,000, 1,068,000), City’s AGT (952,000) and a Jays game on Sportsnet (700,000).

WEDNESDAY

A big night for Global with Big Brother (1,260,000) leading into Rookie Blue (1,154,000) and Extant (1,155,000). City had America’s Got Talent (927,000). CTV went with a two hour SYTYCD (764,000) and a repeat of Motive (802,000).  Batting cleanup was another Blue Jays game on Sportsnet (665,000).

THURSDAY

CTV led with a repeat of Big Bang (1,302,000) followed by Two Half Men (823,000), Gang Related (578,000) and the season finale of 19-2 (513,000). Global premiered the new Kelsey Grammer/Martin Lawrence comedy Partners to 402,000 and 442,000.  Big Brother followed to 1,263,000. Jays and the O’s drew 876,000 on Sportsnet, which was topped by the 885,000 who tuned in for the CFL Sask/Winnipeg tilt on TSN. CBC got 312,000 to watch a Doc Zone repeat. City stuck with its annual summer Can-Con catch up, cramming repeats of Seed 165,000), Package Deal (105,000) and Murdoch (130,000) into another August night.

FRIDAY

All sports: Jays and Tigers pulled 670,000 on Sportsnet. TSN countered with two CFL games, Hamilton-BC (576,000) and Edmonton/Montreal (454,000). CBC offered another FIFA W U20 tilt, Canada vs. Finland (265,000).

SATURDAY

Jays and Tigers did 584,000 on Sportsnet. Ottawa and Calgary tackled 484,000 in CFL action on TSN.

SUNDAY

A quiet week ends with Big Brother (1,126,000) and the Teen Choice Awards (563,000) on Global. CTV had Unforgettable (1,049,000) and Rising Star (734,000). CBC stole 325,000 with True Crime Canada. Shark Week took a bite out of 422,000 with Shark Darkness on Discovery. Space sxailed off with 277,000 with The Last Ship. Jays and Detroit did 752,000 on Sportsnet while TSN carded 375,000 PGA Championship golf fans. Should have been “Fore!”-hundred thousand even.
