Somebody needs to send a few private eyes over to Global to find out why this is the final season Private Eyes.

Jason Priestley wanted to do more seasons, as he tells me in our recent brioux.tv” the podcast conversation. Canadians clearly want to see more. In its second episode back, already switched to a different night, the series ranks No. 3 in English Canada with 1,158,000 total viewers (as measured by Numeris).

Mind you, July 12 – 18 was a slower-than-usual week in broadcasting, landing in between the Stanley Cup and Euro 2020 finals and the Tokyo Olympic Summer Games. Still, Private Eyes beat all three Big Brother broadcasts and Masterchef. It is a remarkably consistent ratings grabber no matter where or when Global plops it on their schedule — and always has been.

Here aree the Top-10 shows of the week as measured in average minute audience (all viewers 2+):

  1. CTV Evening News (CTV) MTWTF 1,395,000
  2. America’s Got Talent (Citytv) Tues 1,266,000
  3. Private Eyes (Global) Thurs 1,158,000
  4. CTV Evening News Weekend (CTV) SS 1,067,000
  5. CTV National News (CTV) MTWTFSS 1,010,000
  6. Big Brother (Global) Wed 1,005,000
  7. Big Brother (Global) Thurs 972,000
  8. Big Brother (Global) Sun 937,000
  9. Masterchef (CTV) Wed 910,000
  10. CTV Late News (CTV) MTWTFSS 725,000

The only other scripted shows on the list were Why Women Kill on W Network (No. 19 with 597,000 viewers); suppertime import Coronation Street on CBC (Friday’s show drew 575,000 for 21st place) and homegrown medical series Nurses at No. 26 (Global, 527,000).

Island of Bryan, No. 11 with 720,000 viewers, continues to impress on the HGTV specialty channel. Tops in sports was the Friday/Saturday average of two Blue Jays games on Sportsnet National, at 15th place with 651,000 fans. The Major League Baseball All-star pre-game broadcast (the home run derby?) drove in 523,000, a 29th place score.
