I admit it–I’m a-scared of The Strain. The new Guillermo del Toro vampire thriller premieres Sunday on FX and FX Canada.

Helping me over my heebie-jeebies was a visit to the set. The Strain shoots in Toronto at an old west-end glass factory-turned-TV studio and the folks there aren’t scary at all. Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bate’s Motel) is the EP/showrunner and it was fun catching up with him on The Adventures of Brico County Jr. The stars of The Strain include Corey Stoll, Kevin Durand, Jonathan Hyde and former CBC Sophie star Natalie Brown.

One of the most delightful gents is David Bradley, the English actor enjoying a late career Renaissance as a Comic-Con idol. Bradley has scored the Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Dr. Who trifecta so he’s like Nerd royalty. He’s also pretty spry for 72 which came in handy as he weathered Toronto’s brutal winter.

When I visited the set in April, Bradley told me he moved into a condo in Toronto for the duration of the shoot and made sure it had a gym and a pool so he could work out. “Haven’t been in it once,” he says.
