Earlier this week, CTV made a quick decision to toss Masterchef Canada into the coveted post-Super Bowl slot. The second season premiere bows right after Sunday’s big game, roughly around 10 p.m. ET. The series will resume next Sunday, Feb. 8 in its regular 7 p.m. timeslot.
It seems like an odd fit at first–a cooking show following a football game–but it actually makes a lot of sense. After all, the Super Bowl is really as much about chowing down with a group of friends as it is about the game itself.
All three Canadian Masterchef judges are back: Michael Bonacini (of the O&B restaurant empire), Alvin Leung (Bo Innovation in Hong Kong) and Claudio Aprile (Origin Restaurants). All three were happy to come back for a second season.
I was on the set several months ago during production on this series and, yes, it smells really good inside the main cooking area. The space where the contestants all stand behind their cooking areas and face the judges is truly cavernous, as big as it looks on TV if not bigger.
The series starts out with 50 contestants from all across Canada vying to be among the Top 16. One of these home cooks will become the ultimate winner and take home the $100,000 prize money, plus, if they’re lucky, a free apron.
I spoke with a few of them, but meet one in the video above: Sabrina Poirier, an office manager from Montreal, Que. Anyone who likes Romados Chicken in Montreal that much has to have an edge in this competition, I’m thinkin’.
