PASADENA, Calif.–Michael Gambon is an acclaimed Irish actor who never seems to stop working. Recent hits include the Harry Potter films and “The King’s Speech.”
His latest, for PBS’ Masterpiece, “is Churchill’s Secret,” which will premiere next fall. The TV-movie looks at WWII icon Winston Churchill’s second go-round as British prime minister, and how a stroke he suffered while in office in 1953 was kept hidden from the world.
Gambon revealed to critics at press tour his own startling secret: “Hearing’s gone a bit funny,” he says. “Can’t remember lines.”
The 75-year-old actor wears a hearing device on stage and during TV and film productions.
“I have a little trick sometimes,” Gambon confessed. “I put a little plug in my ear, and I can hear a friend of mine gives me the lines. That’s the truth.”
He’s not the only actor who does this, apparently.

“Johnny Depp does it as well, so it’s not just me,” he says. “I’m happier now, I don’t think I could do it without that, I don’t know.”
