CTV’s post-Olympic ratings momentum continued without a hiccup Monday. The network’s two new home grown comedies, Hiccups, starring Nancy Robertson and Brent Butt, and Dan For Mayor, starring Mary Ashton, Fred Ewanuick and Paul Bates (above), both premiered to around 1.9 million viewers according to a CTV release Tuesday.
According to BBM Canada overnight estimates, Dan For Mayor topped Hiccups 1,915,000 to 1,899,000 viewers.
The two new shows were part of a Top 6 sweep on the night for CTV, with 9 p.m. comedy imports Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men vaulting over the 2.3 million mark on the night and with CSI Miami drawing another 2 million-plus at 10. The CTV supper hour local newscast came sixth on the night behind Hiccups and Dan with 1,849,000 viewers across Canada.
That massive promotional push from the Winter Games helped Hiccups and Dan For Mayor become the most-watched scripted Canadian premieres so far this season. CBC’s unscripted Battle of the Blades opened to a slightly larger audience last September.
The CTV premieres topped the finale of The Bachelor on Citytv (1,368,000) and a rerun of House on Global (1,320,000). Head-to-head, the 8 p.m. CTV comedies also skunked the two CBC comedies 18 To Life (558,000) and Little Mosque on the Prairie (404,000).
In case you didn’t see them, the premiere episodes of Hiccups and Dan For Mayor will rerun Saturday at 8 and 8:30 p.m. on The Comedy Network.
